Reflections of The Four Seasons
Het album Reflections of The Four Seasons staat in de startblokken. Deze verzameling van vier bijzondere improvisaties Spring - Summer - Autumn - Winter, is ontstaan op het moment dat ik mijn eerste digitale piano kreeg, een Roland KR370, ergens begin 2001.

Nieuwe klanken
Als je weet dat ik zelfs een opleiding heb gedaan voor pianostemmen en reparatie, dan verbaas je je vast over de omruiling van mijn akoestische voor een digitale. En dat klopt ook. Maar op deze manier kon ik toch piano blijven spelen (met koptelefoon) ondanks de kritiek van onze buren. Het werd ook geen keyboard, want een digitale piano is echt heel wat anders dan een keyboard. Deze digitale piano heeft echte pianotoetsen, ‘gewogen toetsen’ zoals dat heet, toetsen die reageren op de mechanische kracht waarmee je ze indrukt. Een keyboard heeft toetsen die op een heel andere manier reageren, meer zoals een klavecimbel. Tijdens mijn ontdekkingsreis op deze nieuwe piano ontstonden nieuwe stukken die ik nooit eerder had gespeeld. Dit nieuwe instrument inspireerde me met nieuwe klanken, impressies, expressies, melodieën, en later ook met meerdere instrumenten.
Reflections of The Four Seasons bestaat de eerste opnames die ik op mijn nieuwe instrument maakte. Het werd de ontdekkingstocht van een nieuwe klankenwereld. En met mijn ervaring als pianostemmer wist ik hoe perfect de klankervaring door Roland was gesampeld. Een ’sample’ is een gedigitaliseerde vorm van een akoestisch geluid.

Vivaldi vs Glastra
Het vierluik van de Vier Jaargetijden is qua idee gebaseerd op Die Vier Jahreszeiten van Vivaldi, “Le quattro stagioni” in het Italiaans, maar muzikaal gezien echt volledig anders en origineel van eigen hand: spontaan geïmproviseerd, niet gecomponeerd, niet op de viool, maar als authentieke pianomuziek.

Componeren, een vak apart
Of het me ooit gaat lukken deze stukken te transscriberen, op papier uit te schrijven, valt nog te bezien. Het is wel een wens, en ik heb de programmatuur er ook voor in huis, in de vorm van MuseScore. Ik schrijf daar ook al volledig nieuwe stukken mee, zelfs voor orkest. Maar het uitschrijven van een improvisatie is een vaardigheid apart.
Ik kom daarom ook steeds meer onder de indruk van het schrijftalent van onze klassieke componisten. Zij moesten zich het totale stuk auditief en visueel voorstellen en vervolgens per instrument noot voor noot met pen op papier uitschrijven. Wij kunnen met onze muziekschrijf programmatuur telkens een stukje schrijven en vervolgens beluisteren en weer bijschaven. We zijn bevoorrechte mensen met alle hulpmiddelen en mogelijkheden die we tegenwoordig hebben. Zij waren bevoorrecht met hun talent om het op hun manier te kunnen doen.

Streaming and sharing
Ik zie uit naar de lancering van Reflections of The Four Seasons, die waarschijnlijk binnenkort zal beginnen met Spring, het Voorjaar. Dit album moest eerst worden geaccepteerd door mijn distributieplatform Amuse dat er vervolgens voor zorgt dat mijn muziek wereldwijd bij allerlei streamingdiensten wordt aangeboden en verspreid.
Sommige van mijn releases of bladmuziek zijn zeer gewild in Japan, andere nummers juist weer in de VS, maar ook in verschillende Europese landen en ver daarbuiten.

Reflections of The Four Seasons

The album Reflections of The Four Seasons is in the starting blocks. This collection of four special improvisations, Spring - Summer - Autumn - Winter, was created when I got my first digital piano, a Roland KR370, sometime in early 2001.

New sounds

If you know that I have even completed training in piano tuning and repair, you will probably be surprised at the exchange of my acoustic for a digital one. And that’s true. But this way I was able to continue playing the piano (with headphones) despite the criticism from our neighbors. It wasn’t a keyboard either, because a digital piano is really different from a keyboard. This digital piano has real piano keys, ‘weighted keys’ as they are called, keys that respond to the mechanical force with which you press them. A keyboard has keys that respond in a completely different way, more like a harpsichord. During my journey of discovery on this new piano, new pieces were created that I had never played before. This new instrument inspired me with new sounds, impressions, expressions, melodies, and later also with multiple instruments.

Reflections of The Four Seasons is the first recording I made on my new instrument. It became the discovery of a new world of sounds. And with my experience as a piano tuner, I knew how perfectly the sound experience was sampled by Roland. A ’sample’ is a digitized form of an acoustic sound.

The idea of the four-part Four Seasons is based on Vivaldi’s Die Vier Jahreszeiten, “Le quattro stagioni” in Italian, but musically speaking it is completely different and original from my own hand: spontaneously improvised, not composed, not on the violin, but as authentic piano music.

Composing, a profession in itself

Whether I will ever manage to transcribe these pieces or write them out on paper remains to be seen. It is a wish, and I also have the software for it in the form of MuseScore. I also write completely new pieces with it, even for orchestra. But writing out an improvisation is a skill in itself.

That is why I am increasingly impressed by the writing talent of our classical composers. They had to imagine the entire piece aurally and visually and then write it out note by note with pen on paper for each instrument. With our music writing software we can write a piece each time and then listen to it and refine it again. We are privileged people with all the tools and opportunities we have today. They were privileged with their talent to be able to do it their way.

Streaming and sharing

I’m looking forward to the launch of Reflections of The Four Seasons, which will likely begin soon, step by step, starting with Spring. This album first had to be accepted by my distribution platform Amuse, which then ensures that my music is offered and distributed worldwide on all kinds of streaming services.

Some of my releases or sheet music are highly sought after in Japan, other songs in the US, but also in various European countries and far beyond.
